I Am Not An Option!

I Am Not An Option!

A couple of months ago, I was awakened to the words “stop giving priority to people who only make you an option.”  Uncertain if I had ever heard those words before, I googled the phrase and low and behold, it was from the late Dr. Maya Angelou’s quote “Never make someone a priority when all you are to them is an option.”

Instantaneously, I got it!  I had been guilty of sacrificing my time, energy, and resources for individuals who saw me as an option.  Was it their fault?  No!  I was the blame.  So I took a moment and did some self-evaluations and found that this was an area that I needed to improve.

I realize that when dealing with matters of the heart, I tend to sacrifice unselfishly for individuals who have not merited or proven themselves to be worthy of what I have to offer. I have missed opportunities to celebrate those who are worthy and deserving of honor because I was focusing attention on those who treat me as an option .

Why do we extend our selves to people who wouldn’t do the same for us? Why do we put our lives on hold for people who wouldn’t even hold on the phone for us? Perhaps we believe that if we give and sacrifice for that person, then they will, in turn, love us and give us what we need; but that is far from the truth. You can’t buy respect.

The moment a person fails to see you as an asset, they become a liability. I don’t know about you but I refuse to beg for someone’s love.  I deserve people in my life that treat me with the same kindness and regard as I do to them.  I have made a decision to love all but celebrate those who are worthy.  I won’t beg to be in anyone’s life and neither should you.  It is time to declutter so you can make room for those who are worthy!

How Do You See You?

Five years ago, I was in, what I call, for lack of a better words, a dark place. I call it that because I was in a place where I couldn't see beyond the now. Honestly, I was depressed and oppressed, but I pressed. There were so many nights that I cried myself to sleep. There were days in which I struggled to eat and was just plain old exhausted; but I kept going.  Every single day, I got up! I got up and and I made a conscious decision to push through the pain. You see I am what you would call a "church" girl. I'm that preacher's kid that LIVED at church. I'd heard enough sermons to carry me through practically anything I could face, and I knew that somehow, if I just kept pushing, if I just kept going, something would break. Things would get better, and they did.   Although I was in a dark space, there was a hope that I had, that was bigger than what I could see. My vision, my faith, and my imagination had shown me "me" in a diff...

You've Changed!

Ever had someone tell you “you’ve changed,” as if it was an insult?  I have too; and my response was “of course I’ve changed.”  I mean what is the point of living if you’re not going to change? Honestly, if we all take a look at our pictures from birth, adolescents, teen years, college years, and even last year, I can guarantee that something about us have changed.   As long as we live, we will change; but I have found that people are more accepting of organic change than they are of intentional change. A few years ago I made a conscious decision to change.   This change was the equivalent of going into a dressing room and changing from sweats to a formal gown. It was drastic, and it was intentional.    I knew that I had been living a sub-par life.   I wasn’t utilizing my education and experiences to help others, and I had gotten in a place where I settled for mediocre.   I was tired of status quo and determined that there was more to lif...

I Didn't Sign Up For That!

How many times do we find ourselves buried in responsibilities and overwhelmed with task that we are literally dreading?   OMG! I can remember the numerous days I consistently walked around with pressure on my forehead because I had taken on or been delegated to do things I just didn’t want to do.   When you are reliable and responsible, people tend to call on you; they know you are capable of delivering.   They see an opportunity to pass the baton to you, and your failure or unwillingness to say "no" puts you in a place where you are overwhelmed and often confused. Ever find yourself trying to manage your dreams and someone else’s too or thinking "I didn't sign up for that?" Now don’t get me wrong, I believe in serving and helping others visions come into fruition.   We definitely need each other, but we must be mindful not to assume so much responsibility that it interferes with our own peace of mind.   Set boundaries.   You must be okay with...
