I Am Not An Option!
A couple of months ago, I was awakened to the words “stop
giving priority to people who only make you an option.” Uncertain if I had ever heard those words
before, I googled the phrase and low and behold, it was from the late Dr. Maya
Angelou’s quote “Never make someone a priority when all you are to them is an
option.”
Instantaneously, I got it!
I had been guilty of sacrificing my time, energy, and resources for individuals
who saw me as an option. Was it their
fault? No! I was the blame. So I took a moment and did some self-evaluations
and found that this was an area that I needed to improve.
I realize that when dealing with matters of the heart, I tend to sacrifice unselfishly for individuals who have not merited or proven
themselves to be worthy of what I have to offer. I have missed opportunities to celebrate those who are worthy and
deserving of honor because I was focusing attention on those who treat me as an option .
Why do we extend our selves to people who
wouldn’t do the same for us? Why do we put our lives on hold for people who
wouldn’t even hold on the phone for us? Perhaps we believe that if we give and
sacrifice for that person, then they will, in turn, love us and give us what we
need; but that is far from the truth. You can’t buy respect.
The moment a person fails to see you as an asset, they
become a liability. I don’t know about you but I refuse to beg for someone’s
love. I deserve people in my life that
treat me with the same kindness and regard as I do to them. I have made a decision to love all but
celebrate those who are worthy. I won’t
beg to be in anyone’s life and neither should you. It is time to declutter so you can make room
for those who are worthy!
