What's Driving You?

What’s Driving You?

President Barack Obama said "it is only when you hitch your wagon to something bigger than yourself that you find your true potential."

Months after I delivered my daughter, Destiny, I began to undergo a series of medical issues.  I experienced hair loss, extreme weight loss, nerve issues, panic attacks, muscle pain, and other health concerns that were challenging to diagnose.  I spent months going back and forth from one specialist to another with no end or diagnosis in sight.  My quality of life was not good and I found myself in a depression. There were times that I would’ve wanted to quit had there not been something greater driving me.  Every single morning, I looked into the eyes of my precious little girl and I found a reason to keep fighting.   She, without knowing it, became my driving factor here on earth.  She is the reason I work so hard.

I don’t think it strange that while life was throwing curve balls, there was one constant that kept me going called my Destiny.  Looking into her beautiful hazel eyes, I saw God’s love for me.  I saw hope, I saw a reason to keep believing.  To this day, when I wake up in the morning, I look at my precious little girl, and I get the boost that I need to keep going.   When I am exhausted and fatigued and want to give up, I think of her.  Every book I write and every play I produce, I consider it me creating a legacy for her. Despite adversity, attack, fatigue, rejection, failure, and many other obstacles, she inspires me to keep on pressing.  I know she is watching me and is depending on me.

If you ask any successful person to what they attribute their success, he or she will likely recall a person, cause, or pivotal and eye-opening moment in their life that drove them to want change.  For some it was rejection and the desire to prove a doubter wrong.  The pain from the negativity they encountered was the fuel that they needed to want a better life.  Whatever the case, most, if not all people, require something or someone to push them beyond their level of comfort.

Simply wanting change is not enough.  You must have a desire and passion that is deeper than you, in order to allow change to happen for you.

Some reading this have desires, dreams, and ambitions that you have been afraid to pursue because you just don’t have the drive.  You don’t think others will support you, or you are afraid to fail.  If you are that person, let this be your push.  From this moment forward, reckon within yourself you will no longer stay parked in this place in life.  Allow your desire for success to override the fear that holds you stagnant.  I challenge you today to hitch your wagon to something bigger than you.  It’s time you move forward.

  1. Great piece. I feel the same about my daughter who is absolutely second to God for the reason I keep getting up.

How Do You See You?

Five years ago, I was in, what I call, for lack of a better words, a dark place. I call it that because I was in a place where I couldn't see beyond the now. Honestly, I was depressed and oppressed, but I pressed. There were so many nights that I cried myself to sleep. There were days in which I struggled to eat and was just plain old exhausted; but I kept going.  Every single day, I got up! I got up and and I made a conscious decision to push through the pain. You see I am what you would call a "church" girl. I'm that preacher's kid that LIVED at church. I'd heard enough sermons to carry me through practically anything I could face, and I knew that somehow, if I just kept pushing, if I just kept going, something would break. Things would get better, and they did.   Although I was in a dark space, there was a hope that I had, that was bigger than what I could see. My vision, my faith, and my imagination had shown me "me" in a diff...

Can you cover me?

Can you cover me? In a world where relationship goals consist of having some one to "Netflix and Chill," I understand why men are confused about what women want and why women are afraid to tell a man what she wants. Men, your average woman of substance, seeking to be a wife, is not as concerned with how well you are in bed; she's focused on what's going on in your head.  While she might commit to sex in an effort to satisfy you, she really wants more.   She wants to know that you care and are concerned with the things that concern her.  She wants to know that in a world that is cold and cruel that you will be her safe place and her protector.   Many men have pursued me in vein thinking what I wanted was fame, finances, and fun times, when all I really need is to be covered! Yes!  That's it!  Can you cover me with your prayers and your support? Can you cover me with your heart and care for me as if I am the most valuable person in your w...

You've Changed!

Ever had someone tell you “you’ve changed,” as if it was an insult?  I have too; and my response was “of course I’ve changed.”  I mean what is the point of living if you’re not going to change? Honestly, if we all take a look at our pictures from birth, adolescents, teen years, college years, and even last year, I can guarantee that something about us have changed.   As long as we live, we will change; but I have found that people are more accepting of organic change than they are of intentional change. A few years ago I made a conscious decision to change.   This change was the equivalent of going into a dressing room and changing from sweats to a formal gown. It was drastic, and it was intentional.    I knew that I had been living a sub-par life.   I wasn’t utilizing my education and experiences to help others, and I had gotten in a place where I settled for mediocre.   I was tired of status quo and determined that there was more to lif...
